Getting started

What is the website design process and how long will it take to get my website live?

Initially we talk to you either face-to-face or on the phone so we understand what you want from a new website and start to understand what your business is about. Then we send you our proposals, quotation, the timescale for the work and payment schedule. If this is acceptable, we can get started.


Our team will perform research and discovery to plan and inform the phases of the project.

We’ll then send you a questionnaire to find out more about you, your business and contact details for the website. We aim to get your site live within one month, but this depends on a timely response to any queries.

How long will it take to design my website?

This is dependent on the size of the project and the time it takes you the client to provide content, information and any feedback on our design ideas. As a rough guide:
Brochure website designs normally take approx. 4 weeks. Although more complex projects can take longer.
– E-commerce websites can take 6 to 12 weeks depending on the size and complexity of the site.
We know that deadlines are very important and we will always do our utmost to meet them.

Will I own the finished product?

Yes. All we ask is the right to use screenshots and a description of your site in our work portfolio.

What do I need to provide you with to get started?

This information is required to some extent for all our services.

Copy text – I ask for draft some content during the Structure and content stage of the project. Although I like to talk to each client about many aspects of their business so that I have my own notes as a basis.

Photos – Quality images of your product or service is essential to do your business justice. Many people use good photos taken on photos or cameras, some use professional photos. Landscape photos are often more useful in website work.

Branding – Your logo and any other branding/marketing assets you have.

How soon can we get started?

Once you agree to start the project and you have paid the initial payment, I can then schedule in the work.
For Website Designs there may be a lead in time of up to 2 months, but I will have informed you of this in the initial quote.During this time you can get all the necessary information together.
For Social Media Marketing & SEO services, these can start within a week or two, once I have all the necessary information.

If I ask for a quote, what happens next?

We have a process for our services, which we find works well.

First we need to find out more about you and your business, so we can better understand what you do and your requirements. The more we understand what your business offers, the better.

Then we research and plan your site. Research on your industry, best keywords, your competitors etc.. Then we start to plan the design of the website.

Next we design and build the site to include any features required. Once you are happy with our proposal, the website design can begin, starting with the front page design and then the inner pages with the necessary functionalities eg enquiry form, content management system, shopping cart, etc..

Then we test the website thoroughly to ensure that it is error-free.
Finally the website ‘goes live’ online.

Do you outsource your work?

No. All our work is 100% in-house, so we have complete control. And you can contact us at any time.

I don't live near Bury St Edmunds, can I use your services?

Yes. We have clients both local to Bury St Edmunds and further afield. We often meet local clients face-to-face but can communicate effectively with clients from any location by internet, email and telephone.

Web design

I need an eCommerce website, can you help?

Yes. We can set up an e-commerce website to include integration with popular payment providers such as PayPal, Stripe etc..

How much does a New Website Cost?

Our website designs for small business are tailor-made to your requirements and your business.

Guideline costs are:
One-page Websites – from £600 (there is no vat). If special functionality is needed there will be an additional cost. 
Brochure Websites – most sites £950 (there is no vat) but more complex, large sites would cost more.
Ecommerce Websites – projects start from £1,500 (there is no vat).


I haven't got any images for my business, can you help?

We are happy to advise on the images needed. Most people take their own images using mobile phones or cameras, and these are mostly perfectly good for using on a business website design. Alternatively if you prefer you can use a professional photographer to take your photos.

Please note, it is very important that any images used on your website are owned by yourself. We will not accept any images taken from Google unless you can prove you own the copyright or that they are royalty free.

You can source copyright free images from www.unsplash.com or www.pexels.com.

When are payment due for work done?

For new website designs, 25% (non refundable) deposit is required before work starts, the final payment is due when the site goes live.

For web maintenance, social media services done-for-you or SEO packages, monthly payments in advance by direct debit.

Website features

Can I connect my website to my Social Media pages?

Yes. We can set up links to your social media pages from the new website at no extra cost.

Do you use WordPress?

Yes. WordPress is a very popular platform and is continually updated with the latest functionality. It is flexible for creating beautiful designs and powerful features for selling your products or services.

What type of security will be on my website?

Security and backups are very important to prevent your website from being hacked. These features need to be completed and kept updated regularly.

We install Plugins on your site for security:

  • Wordfence Security – provides many security features along with alerts to any suspicious activity on your site
  • Updraft Plus – A free to use back up plugin that once set up backs up your site automatically. It is YOUR responsibility to update and backup your site. Alternatively we can provide an ongoing monthly website maintenance plan.

This is very important! We do NOT keep any backups of your site if things go wrong. If anything does happen and you lose your site you are not entitled to a refund or it is not our responsibility.

What about Search Engine Optimisation on the new website?

Before we start each new website, we research the best  keywords for your business, to ensure that Google will be able to find your website. We include all on-page SEO for the site, each page and the elements within a page. We ensure that the site is fast, images are optimised with alt-text to improve your SEO score.

However, SEO is not a ‘one-trick pony’, it requires ongoing work to stay optimised. For this reason, some of our clients use our Search Engine Optimisation Service for ongoing SEO work each month to retain and improve their Google rankings.

Will my website be connected to Google Analytics and Google Search?

Yes. You will need a Google account for Google Analytics, Google Search and for your Google My Business. With your Google login details, we can set up these features and links to your new website at no extra cost.

Domains & Hosting

What is a domain name?

A domain name is the unique address which points to your website. Eg. afford-web-design.co.uk.

You must ensure that your domain name is unique. Domain names are not purchased but are leased for periods of usually two or more years. The lessee or ‘owner’ of the domain then has the right to renew and continue ownership of the domain name so long as the renewal fees are maintained.

Who manages a domain name?

You can either buy and manage a domain name yourself, or we can purchase and manage the domain name(s) on your behalf, this is what we do for many of our clients.

This management involves taking care of the name servers, the renewals and management of the domains. We ensure that it is owned by you, which is important and always the way that providers register domains for others.

What is web hosting?

Web hosting is the webspace that you need to rent in order to publish your website online. Web hosting companies offer various packages. We can help you choose the appropriate package for your website needs.

transfer domain

If you already have your domain registered with a company such as GoDaddy, you can transfer them to another company or hosting provider.

For .com domains an Authorisation code must be exchanged to make this happen. This can take up to a week.

For domains such as .co.uk, an IPS (Internet Provider Security) tag must be changed from the one of the new host. This happens as soon as the tag is released, which should not take more than 24 hours.

How do I get an email address for my domain?

To create a business email, you must first have a domain name for your business, for example the domain name for this site is afford-web-design.co.uk. You can then create a number of different individual email addresses for each of your employees using their personal names or titles. Once you’ve set up an email address you can then access your emails anytime and anywhere.

Does my website need an SSL Certificate?

We would recommend that you should purchase an SSL security certificate. Internet users are becoming more informed on internet safety and if they can see your website has got an https rather than HTTP, it can only raise their impression of your business. Also, Google is now rewarding websites with an SSL certificate with higher rankings.

Social Media & SEO

How much does Social Media Marketing cost?

Social media services done-for-you start with:
– Review & optimisation of existing social pages/ or set up of new social pages if required.
– For example to post twice weekly on 2 social channels with relevant content and tailor-made imagery.
– Daily checks on any interaction on posts, with responses as required.
Cost: £120 pm

What is SEO?

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization.

Work on website SEO is to help the search engines understand what your site is about so that it can show up in search results to gain traffic and grow business.

Search engines “crawl” websites to understand the content and the purpose of the site. We work on SEO to make your site easy for the search engines like Google to crawl and view your website and understand exactly what you do. They can then recommend your site to people who are searching for terms that relate to your business.

How much do your SEO services cost?

Our SEO services include: Keyword & competitor research, Review coding, Review meta tags, Optimise images, Correct errors, Review scripting, Optimise Google maps, Optimise Social media presence, Build links etc...

Basic SEO package starts with 3 hour work per month for £120 per month (there is no vat).

What do SEO services do?

Our SEO services include many factors including keyword research, competitor analysis, content analysis, optimisation of coding and meta tags, optimise images, reputation monitoring and Google Analytics evaluation and more.
